Baire Category Quantifier in Monadic Second Order Logic
We consider Rabin’s Monadic Second Order logic (MSO) of the full binary tree extended with Harvey Friedman’s “for almost all” second-order quantifier (∀∗) with semantics given in terms of Baire Category. In Theorem 1 we prove that the new quantifier can be eliminated (MSO+∀∗ =MSO). We then apply this result to prove in Theorem 2 that the finite–SAT problem for the qualitative fragment of the pr...
متن کاملResource-Bounded Baire Category: A Stronger Approach
This paper introduces a new deenition of resource-bounded Baire category in the style of Lutz. This deenition gives an almost-all/almost-none theory of various complexity classes. The meagerness/comeagerness of many more classes can be resolved in the new deenition than in previous deenitions. For example, almost no sets in EXP are EXP-complete, and NP is PF-meager unless NP = EXP. It is also s...
متن کاملThe Baire Category Theorem in Weak Subsystems of Second-Order Arithmetic
Working within weak subsystems of second-order arithmetic Z2 we consider two versions of the Baire Category theorem which are not equivalent over the base system RCAo. We show that one version (B.C.T.I) is provable in RCAo while the second version (B.C.T.II) requires a stronger system. We introduce two new subsystems of Z2, which we call RCA' and WKL', and show that RCA' suffices to prove B.C.T...
متن کاملThe Bang-Bang theorem via Baire category. A Dual Approach
The paper develops a new approach to the classical bang-bang theorem in linear control theory, based on Baire category. Among all controls which steer the system from the origin to a given point x̄, we consider those which minimize an auxiliary linear functional φ. For all φ in a residual set, we show that the minimizing control is unique and takes values within a set of extreme points.
متن کاملA Baire Category Approach to the Bang-Bang Property
Aim of this paper is to develop a new technique, based on the Baire category theorem, in order to establish the closure of reachable sets and the existence of optimal trajectories for control systems, without the usual convexity assumptions. The bangbang property is proved for a new class of “concave” multifunctions, characterized by the existence of suitable linear selections. The proofs rely ...
